Mike Sumner has practiced law for over thirty years with firms in Newnan and Atlanta. Mike is a trial lawyer and certified mediator, specializing in estate, probate, and commercial disputes. He regularly represents fiduciaries, including executors, administrators and trustees, as well as heirs and beneficiaries, in all types of will or trust matters. Mike has served as the County Administrator, and the County Conservator and Guardian for minor children and incompetent adults for the Coweta County Probate Court since 1998. He is an AV rated lawyer, the highest possible rating in legal expertise and ethics. In, 2013, the National Law Journal recognized Mike as one of Georgia’s Top Lawyers, as chosen by his peers.
In commercial matters, Mike represents individuals in small businesses in a wide variety of business matters, including corporate formation, mergers and dissolutions, partnership disputes, buy/sell agreements, covenants not to compete, and non-disclosure agreements. He is also experienced in municipal law, having previously represented Newnan Utilities, the City of Grantville and the Town of Moreland. Mike is licensed to practice in all Georgia federal and state courts and the United States Tax Court.
Mike is a certified mediator for both commercial and estate disputes. Mike also serves as a Special Master for the Georgia Supreme Court in attorney discipline matters. Mike recently served on the selection panel for United States Magistrate Judges for the United States District Court, Northern District of Georgia.
For many years, Mike has been active in a variety of civic matters. He is past Chair of the Coweta County Board of Education, where he served as an at-large board member for sixteen years. Mike is a member and past president of the Newnan Rotary Club and Newnan-Coweta Heart Association. He is also a past Deacon and Chair of the Central Baptist Church Board of Deacons. Mike served several years on the Metro Y- Camp High Harbour board of directors, where all three of the Sumner boys attended camp. Mike has served on the University of Georgia Law School Alumni Council and for several years was a member of the Executive Council for the Younger Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia.
Mike received a degree in finance from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Georgia.
